Help Needed to Fund Wooster Memorial Park’s 39-acre Lehr Road Addition

to Expand Nature Recreation and Protected Public Forest

 

Twenty-two years ago, a group of local citizens created the Friends of Wooster Memorial Park (FWMP) to help preserve and protect the gift of Wooster Memorial Park (WMP) given to the City of Wooster by Paul Spangler. At that time, the park was 254 acres. Since then, with Clean Ohio Green Space Conservation Program funds, various other grants, local contributions, a high level of volunteerism and support of the community, the park has grown to a 422-acre high-quality natural recreation area. Through the joint efforts of the City, FWMP and Killbuck Watershed Land Trust, a conservation easement ensures the park will remain a natural recreation area in perpetuity. This new Lehr Road Property presents a rare opportunity to add 39+ acres to the park and expand the largest forested public natural area in Wayne County. 

 

The Lehr Road Property adjoins WMP’s northern boundary and hosts a mix of upland forest, pine plantations, and homestead/yard situated above the Little Killbuck Creek. In addition to its high-quality natural hardwood forests, the site is a Certified Ohio Tree Farm and supports a wide diversity of Ohio’s native flora and fauna.

 

Monies have already been granted from the Clean Ohio Fund, Noble Foundation, Wooster Runners and the Killbuck Watershed Land Trust. We are in need of the final $20,000 to reach the total cost of $572,000. By contributing to this project, you will be part of a group working to preserve a forested recreation area for generations to come.  Please give what you can -- any amount will help.
