Join us for a beginner's morning bird walk in the Old Field area of the Park. Early May is an excellent time to look for birds in the park, as many of the migrant songbirds that breed here have just returned and are in full song. These include Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Scarlet Tanager, Indigo Bunting, and Hooded Warbler. Some are heard more easily than seen, such as the Louisiana Waterthrush and Yellow-throated Vireo. We might even catch a glimpse of species passing through on their journey north, the Black-throated Green and Black-and-white Warblers are among the many possibilities! Jelmer Poelstra will lead the way, helping us identify the various birds we see and hear. This will not be a strenuous hike, as we will walk slowly to find the birds.
