KENWOOD ACRES UPDATE: May 1, 2018

With the nice weather today and tomorrow, grade work is beginning on the Kenwood trail today and paving will soon follow. The tack coat for the asphalt will be laid down this afternoon so the Kenwood trail will be closed -
PLEASE DO NOT WALK ON THE TACK.
Thank you for your patience and understanding!

KENWOOD ACRES UPDATE: February 23, 2018

All of the contracted wooden structures for the Kenwood ADA trails have been completed. These include two boardwalks with overlooks and a bridge over a ravine, also with an overlook. McB Paving, construction manager, contracted with Simonson Construction to complete the job. One exception is the east overlook built by Eagle Scout Ben Bower. Workers for Simonson bravely completed building the west overlook in January in single digit weather. We thank these tradesmen for the incredibly beautiful and professional job they did.

The asphalt paving for the Kenwood trails will be completed in late May to early June, once the temperature is warm enough. Concrete pads for benches and picnic tables will be poured around the same time. Eagle Scout candidate Evan Miller will be constructing and installing 5 ADA compatible benches. Plans for reseeding and restoring the prairie and seeding grass for the borders of the asphalt paths are also underway. We are hoping the project will be completed by late June or early July.

Plans are in preliminary stages for a dedication and celebration for later in July. Stay tuned for further updates.

KENWOOD ACRES UPDATE: October 11, 2017

The Kenwood Acres ADA Nature Trails construction is underway. Trails are cleared and being prepped for asphalt. The pylons and abutments for boardwalks and bridges are being installed. The main entrance was landscaped and grass was planted. Bridge and boardwalks will be constructed in the next few weeks. We are very pleased with progress and we are on schedule for completion.

KENWOOD ACRES UPDATE: September 10, 2017

We are very excited to announce that construction of the Kenwood Acres ADA Nature Trail & Entrance began on Tuesday, September 5! If all goes as planned, construction will be completed by the end of November.

Feel free to walk the developing trails, but be aware that there will be construction machinery on the trails at various times. It will be best to park at Silver Rd. and walk from the main park to Kenwood Acres.

Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017 - Jeremy Betson of Mc.B Paving guides a dump truck as the circular drive at the new Kenwood Acres entrance is constructed. Mc.B Paving, the contractor on the Kenwood Acres ADA Project, also did the ADA trail at Barnes Preserve.

KENWOOD ACRES UPDATE: June 26, 2017

Since the purchase of the parcel known as Kenwood Acres in September 2013 many of the goals established by FWMP have been met. Two trails have been established to connect Kenwood to Wooster Memorial Park. Over 7000 trees and shrubs along with a prairie have been planted and are being maintained. Now the next phase: CREATE SEPARATE ENTRANCE AND PARKING; AND CREATE HANDICAPPED ACCESSIBLE TRAILS, RESTROOM AND PICNIC AREA are in the works. One of FWMP’s long-term goals has been to expand the functionality of WMP to provide opportunities for nature-based recreation and immersion for people of all ages and abilities in Wayne County. We obtained funds from both the Clean Ohio and Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Recreational Trail Programs to construct an ADA-approved parking area and 1-mile asphalt trail with boardwalks and overlooks. Bidding for construction of the project was opened on June 21, 2017. Bidding will be closed at noon on July 12 and soon after a contract will be awarded. We are very excited to begin this final phase of development for Kenwood Acres.

Unfortunately, some elements of the project are costing more than anticipated, so we are seeking $10,000 in additional funds for ADA-compatible interpretive signage, benches, picnic tables and a display case for a kiosk in the parking area. If you or anyone you know is willing to help with this additional cost contact us. You can find contact information by clicking the "contact" tab on our website.

KENWOOD ACRES DEVELOPMENT

Kenwood Acres was planted to a mix of hardwood trees and shrubs in mid-April, 2015 with the help of many volunteers and the professional aid of Twinsberry Tree Farm.  About 18 acres was planted to 7,500 trees.  A mix of prairie grasses and forbs was also planted adjacent to the trees and interspersed with the trees.  Thanks to the many volunteers who helped us with this project!  For more pictures of this effort, go to Photos and Tree Planting.
